PART 1: Community and Belonging: Why It Matters More Than Ever

What is community?

The Cambridge Dictionary defines ‘community’ as follows:

“All the people living in one particular area or people who are considered as a unit because of their common interests, social group or nationality”

At first glance, it feels simple, but there is more to it.

A group of people reminds us that community is never built in isolation. It requires connection, shared presence, and interaction. Humans are relational by nature. We grow through people, not just by ourselves.

Living in the same place speaks to proximity: your school, your workplace, your neighbourhood. These environments shape your daily experiences, your exposure, and often your opportunities.

But the most powerful part is this: having something in common.

Today, community is no longer limited by location. It is built on shared identity, values, goals, and lived experiences.

Community is not just where you are. It is what shapes who you become.

Why Do We Seek Community?

We live in a world where we are constantly connected, yet many people still feel alone.

Because connection is not the same as belonging.

At the heart of community is the need to belong.

We want to feel seen, understood, and valued.
We want to feel like we matter.

Belonging creates safety.
And from safety comes growth.

When people feel like they belong, they stop shrinking and start expanding.

Community and Growth

Growth doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens when people support you, challenge you, and build with you-one step at a time

Your environment is always shaping you.

The conversations you hear.
The behaviours you observe.
The standards around you.

All of it matters.

A healthy community should challenge you, support you, and help you grow.

The right environment does not just support growth. It accelerates it.

Community, Identity, and Representation

For me, this experience is deeply personal.

As a dyslexic Black STEM educator working within edtech, I understand how powerful the right environment can be.

Growing up, neurodivergence was often misunderstood, particularly within parts of the Black African community. It was sometimes considered a limitation, rather than something that also comes with strengths.

Because of that, many learners start to see themselves in a narrow way.

But that is not the full story.

The Power of Neurodivergent Community

Being around other people with dyslexia who are thriving changed my perspective.

It showed me that:

Dyslexia is not a limitation. It is a different way of thinking.

That kind of representation matters.

It builds confidence.
It shifts identity.
It changes belief.

Before I found out I had dyslexia at university, I saw neurodivergence as a limitation and did not see it as something that applied to me, reflecting how people with learning differences were often viewed, largely due to a lack of awareness and education at the time.

Even though I knew deep down that I had a learning difference, I was in denial.

When I found out I had dyslexia at university, I initially saw it as a barrier, but over time I came to realise it was never the label itself that limited me but how it was understood and how I had been categorised because of it.

Creating Spaces Where Learners Thrive

Every journey starts somewhere. From a little girl full of curiosity to a Lead STEM educator helping others turn questions into possibilities-this is what growth looks like.

Through my work within edtech and education, I am part of building a community where:

  • Neurodivergent learners are understood
  • Different ways of thinking are valued
  • Students are supported to thrive, not just cope

Because when learners feel seen, everything changes.

Confidence grows.
Engagement increases.
Potential is unlocked.

And belief becomes the foundation for growth.

If you know a young person who might need support, it’s worth acting sooner rather than later. The right support can make a real difference.

The right support does not just improve results.

It builds belief.
